Ask anyone who works in residential childcare where the best care happens, and most will give you the same answer: in small homes. Ours are deliberately small, and this is why.
Care runs on relationships, and relationships have arithmetic. In a small home, every adult knows every child properly: their history, their triggers, their humour, the way they like their toast. Nobody is anonymous, and nothing important goes unnoticed. A subdued breakfast gets clocked by someone who knows what subdued means for that particular child. In large settings, that fine-grained knowledge thins out, however good the staff.
Small also means quieter. Fewer people means less noise, less unpredictability, and fewer collisions between children whose needs can clash. For children who find busy environments overwhelming, and for children whose radar for tension never switches off, the difference between a household of four and a unit of twelve is the difference between settling and surviving.
Matching works better at small scale too. Every new arrival changes a home's chemistry, and in a small home we can genuinely think that through: how these particular children, with these particular needs, will live alongside one another. It is one of the reasons we treat referrals so carefully. Getting the mix right is half the work of stability.
And small homes feel like what they are supposed to be: homes. A family-sized table. A normal house on a normal street. Neighbours, a corner shop, a school run. Childhood at ordinary scale, which is exactly the experience many of our children have been missing.
There is a cost to smallness: it will never be the cheapest way to run care. We think it is the right way. When people ask what our model is, the honest answer is short. Keep the homes small, keep the teams steady, and let the relationships do the work.
