Nobody at Able is ever finished learning, and that is by design.
It starts with a paid induction before a new colleague ever leads a shift: safeguarding, first aid, medication, de-escalation, and the beginnings of understanding why children in our homes behave as they do. Then the deeper work begins. The Level 3 Diploma in Residential Childcare, funded by us, completed alongside the job with an assessor who visits the home. Therapeutic practice training that turns theory into instinct. Positive behaviour support certification, renewed on schedule, so that calm and safety are skills rather than hopes.
But courses are only half of how people grow here. The other half is the rhythm of practice: supervision every month that actually happens, debriefs after hard shifts where the learning is found together, and team meetings where the question is not only what happened, but what it taught us. Reflection is not a luxury in this work. It is how experience becomes expertise.
Growth continues for as long as ambition does. Colleagues stepping towards seniority get the Level 4. Future managers get the Level 5 in Leadership and Management, funded, with real responsibility introduced deliberately and support behind it. Most of our senior people started on the floor, and we intend to keep it that way, because leaders who have done the job lead it better.
There is a reason we invest like this, and it is not generosity. Children in our homes are cared for by whoever is on shift. The better trained, better supported and more confident that person is, the better the child's day goes. Staff development is child welfare, one step removed.
So the honest promise to anyone joining us is this: you will not arrive as the finished article, and you will never be treated as one. Neither is anyone else here.
