Start with what actually transfers. If you have calmed an angry customer, you have de-escalated. If you have kept a team functioning through a brutal Saturday service, you know pressure and you know teamwork. If you have raised children, coached a junior football side or looked after a relative, you already understand routines, patience and the long game. The settings change. The human skills do not.
What we look for cannot be taught: warmth, reliability, calmness, and the stomach to keep showing up for a child who is testing whether you will. What we can teach, we do, thoroughly. Paid induction before your first solo shift. Safeguarding, first aid, medication, de-escalation and positive behaviour support. Then the Level 3 Diploma in Residential Childcare, funded by us, earned while you work. You will not be dropped in the deep end, and you will never be on shift without support.
Be honest with yourself about the demands. This is shift work, including evenings, weekends and sleep patterns that suit some lives better than others. There will be hard days, and some of them will follow you home until you learn, with help, how to set them down. Career changers who thrive here are the ones who wanted work that asks something of them.
